Bracelets – History

Bracelets – A very brief history!

The word emanates from the Greek word “brachile” meaning “of the arm”.

Historical records make reference to the wearing of bracelets or arm-wear over thousands and thousands of years across almost every civilisation in every time period. Bracelets have been worn as trophies, a symbol of status, protection against evil spirits, a guide to gods in the afterlife, a record of life events or for personal pleasure.

Bracelets come in all shapes and sizes and can be made out of many different materials. Bracelets can be plain or heavily decorated with precious stones and gems. For most of us bracelets are a fashion accessory that we wouldn’t be without. A must have accessory!

Bracelets as I.D. – most festivals issue a bracelet/band as identification to be worn throughout the event. Music festivals often colour code to signify age or restriction. One of the most important uses of I.D. bracelets are those used as medical alerts. Covering everything from allergies to serious medical conditions, SOS jewellery can alert first response medics to critical medical information.

Over the pages in this website I hope to explore all the different types of bracelets that we wear today, and, if there existence is steeped in history.
